Korean War, Second Tour, 1952

After a “refit” in Australia and a period of respite from the war HMS Glory went back to operational duties in February 1952. Flying operations began on 7 February 1952 and HMS Glory completed five patrols during the Second Tour. During this Tour the 5000th deck landing took place.

On 17 March 1952 there were reports of an impending Communist attack on Sok-to Island and HMS Glory launched an air offensive on enemy targets. It was on this day that HMS Glory created a new record of 106 sorties for a light fleet carrier. As Neil McCart states in his book HMS Glory 1945 to 1961:

“It was a magnificent effort by both aircrews and the maintenance personnel, who produced 100% serviceability during the day”.

It was a “magnificent effort” by all on board and the ship continued to exceed expectations.

On 1 May 1952 HMS Glory left Sasebo and set sail for Hong Kong on her way to Malta. There were stops at Singapore and Aden before she went through the Suez canal. She arrived on 26 May 1952. Shortly after her arrival her Air Group transferred to HMS Theseus for the passage home.
