Korean War Third Tour, 1952 to 1953

As part of the Mediterranean Fleet once more HMS Glory embarked on an Official visit to Istanbul. Two new squadrons were embarked 807 and 898. It was while in the Bosphorus that political troubles erupted in Egypt and there was a threat to the Suez Canal. Egyptian Army Officers were threatening a coup. HMS Glory recalled all its crew from their shore leave and left for North Africa., she arrived in Tobruk on 28 July 1952. Fortunately the crisis eased and HMS Glory sailed for Cyprus where she stayed and conducted flying practice before returning to Malta and her squadrons disembarked.

On 1 September 1952 HMS Glory embarked two new squadrons 801 and 821 and conducted and official visit to Barcelona, the first time since 1933 that Royal Navy ships had visited the port.

HMS Glory returned to Malta and on 3 October 1952 she set sail bound for operations off Korea.

Commander in Chief Mediterranean Fleet, Admiral Louis Mountbatten, came on board in 1952 and addressed the Ship’s Company and informed us of the ‘bad news’ that we would be returning to Korea and operations. He said there was good news and that was he was coming with us as far as Port Said!

On her passage she was diverted and on 27 October 1952 HMS Glory’s aircraft flew 30 sorties to attack a Malayan terrorist gang in Kuala Langat.

HMS Glory’s final patrol of her Third Tour, her eleventh, began on 4 May 1953 and was completed on 17 May 1953.
